Seasonal and tanned clients

Hair removal machines for tanned skin

1064nm-capable machines for treating tanned clients from £6,600 ex. VAT. Keep the summer diary full instead of deferring.

HairRemovalMachines.co.uk supplies professional laser and IPL hair removal machines to UK clinics, salons and medi-spas. Tanned skin is a seasonal business problem as much as a clinical one: in a UK salon, the months when clients most want hair removal are the months when many of them are tanned.

A tan raises effective epidermal melanin, which means a wavelength that was safe in March may not be safe in August at the same settings on the same client. On a single-wavelength 755nm or IPL platform the honest answer is usually to defer treatment by two to four weeks — and deferred sessions are cancelled sessions more often than rescheduled ones. On a 1064nm-capable machine, the answer is a wavelength change and a conservative fluence.

That is the entire commercial argument for specifying 1064nm even if your regular client base is light-skinned. It converts a seasonal gap in the diary into ordinary bookings. Set the protocol properly: record recent and planned sun exposure at every consultation, treat fresh tan and any sunburn as an absolute defer, patch test when phototype has shifted, and step fluence down rather than pushing through.

Self-tan is a separate and easier problem: it must be fully removed before treatment, because the pigment sits in the stratum corneum where it will absorb energy and burn. Twenty-four hours and a thorough exfoliation is the usual instruction.

The machines listed here all deliver 1064nm. For the wider protocol across every phototype, use the all-skin-types hub.

Frequently asked

How long after a holiday can a client be treated?
Most UK clinics require two to four weeks without significant sun exposure, and longer if the tan is deep. On 1064nm the window is more forgiving, but assessment still applies.
Can tanned clients be treated on IPL?
Generally no, or only at heavily reduced fluence with the longest available filter and pulse width. Broadband output and raised epidermal melanin are a poor combination.
Does fake tan matter if it is only cosmetic?
Yes. Self-tan pigment absorbs treatment energy in the outer skin layer and can cause superficial burns. It must be exfoliated off before the session.
