Can laser hair removal treat tanned skin?
Tanned skin can be treated at 1064nm Nd:YAG with conservative fluence and strong cooling, because melanin absorption at that wavelength is low. Shorter wavelengths and IPL generally require deferring by two to four weeks. Active sunburn and unremoved self-tan are absolute contraindications.

Why a tan changes the settings
A tan is increased epidermal melanin, which effectively raises the client's phototype for the purposes of treatment. Settings that were safe in March may not be safe in August on the same client. On a 1064nm-capable machine the answer is a wavelength change; on a single-wavelength 755nm or IPL platform it is usually a deferral.
Protocol
Record recent and planned sun exposure at every appointment, not only at first consultation. Re-patch-test when phototype has visibly shifted. Reduce fluence and lengthen pulse width. Defer entirely for active sunburn.
Self-tan must be fully exfoliated off at least 24 hours before treatment. The pigment sits in the stratum corneum, where it absorbs treatment energy and causes superficial burns.
